From Russian Media blaming Call of Duty Modern Warfare II to be the culprit behind Airport Attacks (read full story), to the Fox News finding Bulletstorm behind the increase in rape cases (read full story); it seems that there are “some people” who are desperate to relate every evil with video games. But still, even in this darkness, there is some hope of light.
Recent study at the University of Michigan revealed that puzzle games are excellent for children's abstract reasoning and problem solving skills. The study, lead by the psychologist Susanne Jaeggi, was carried out on sixty two elementary and middle school children. Thirty two of them were trained via video games for fifteen minutes, 5 times a week for one month, while the remaining thirty were educated with general knowledge and vocabulary tasks.
The results were extremely encouraging. Children with video game training were way ahead in abstract reasoning and problem solving. And guess what, the effects were lasted for three months.
So in the end, the thing is simple. If you are a kid who is constantly scolded by his/her parents for “wasting time” on video games, this study is exactly what you need. Finally, we can all play our favorite video games with "heads held high".
