Max Payne 3 Preview: Don’t let the baldness fool you, Max Payne is still Max Payne

Blue Skies, a bald man with strong physique and a bit oversized tummy; if these are the things that are awakening your skeptical instincts regarding Max Payne 3 then I guess you are fretting for no reason. Despite the fact that he has gained some weight (after-all, it has been eight years since we last saw him), rest assured that the man arriving at Sao Paulo in March 2012 is the same Max Payne that we knew as a hard-boiled detective/fugitive, implementing “natural justice” on the streets of New York City.

After wandering in the darkness for almost eight years, Max has been offered a job, a job only a guy like Max Payne can do, by a long time associate Raul Passos who came all the way from Brazil to Max’s messed-up apartment in New Jersey. But before Raul could make himself at home, a group of street junkies (“employed” by Mafia boss Anthony DeMarco whose son got a ticket to the “other world” thanks to Payne’s handy work on a rough field day) came knocking at Max’s door to settle some unfinished business. So both hardcore ex-cops are left with only one option to convince the mobsters on terms favorable to them (Payne and Passos). The option was: Let the guns do the talking.

With Max yearning for an escape-route from his messed up life, from the dark streets of New York City; in-short from his past, he accepted Raul’s offer and flew with him to meet Rodrigo Branco (a real estate mogul) in a nice looking office at Sao Paulo, Brazil. Max was tasked to find Branco’s missing wife, Fabianna. During discussion, all hell broke loose when some armed men stormed Branco’s office and his expensive security system failed to respond, and Max was left with nothing but to use his old, reliable rule once again (i.e. Let the guns do the talking in-case you didn’t get it somehow). And then…….wait till March 2012 and you’ll know.

The Technical Aspects

Max Payne 3 has made use of Euphoria Engine (along with Rockstar’s own RAGE Engine) which has given a very realistic look to the overall environment. From people’s reaction to different emotional situations to Max gunning down his enemies, it’s all literally breath-taking. When Max dives, he does in a way so as to adjust himself according to his surroundings and he can lie on the ground as long as he (you) wants to. While on the ground, he can also shoot at 360° around without any fuss, all possible because of the utilization of Euphoria Engine.

The AI of the enemy depends on the level of opponent you are facing. You can easily deal with the ragtag groups while you’ll have to be at your best when dealing with professional assassins. The new feature in this regard is the “Max aggressiveness level”. If you are aggressive in your approach, your enemies will get demoralized and will become defensive as a result. If you prefer the defensive route, your enemies will get emboldened and will try to turn the tide against you.

“Last Man Standing” feature has been imported from the previous titles but with some added tweaks. If you are low on health, you will have final moments, in slow-motion, to kill the guy who gave you the fatal wound. Kill him and you will recover some health at the cost of one painkiller (that works only when you have an unused painkiller).

The new feature that has been employed in Max Payne 3 is cinematic experiences where Max will perform some Hollywood-style stunts, all in slow motion.

Finally, Max Payne is incomplete without its standard “Bullet Time” feature. This aspect of the game will slow down time so you can not only hunt multiple enemies with style but also to see the physical impacts of bullets on your enemies. Normally, this feature is used when Max is in tough situations; for example, when Max is surrounded by multiple opponents.

What to expect

Max Payne 3 will bring back all the features that Max Payne franchise has been known for. Though Rockstar has taken quite a long time in development, they have done justice in the end. As I said earlier, don’t worry about the improved physique of Max or sunny skies; Max Payne is still the same old guy (not physically though) which we knew as a hardcore cop in New York City. For old Max Payne fans, the third title will expand Max Payne’s legacy but in much more realistic way. Rockstar has stated that the storyline contains some events where Max will pay a visit to his home ground i.e. New York City, so you will experience some sort of déjà vu. For newbies who are planning to join Max Payne club, prepare to witness one of the best third person shooter of 2012. Quite frankly, if you think 2011 was the best in terms of quality games, wait till you get Max Payne 3.

On a side-note, if eight years gap reminds you of Duke Nukem Forever, let me tell you again that you are upsetting yourself for no reason. Though Rockstar has taken eight years, they have ensured that you get the Max Payne experience in style.

It is not the time to sit back and relax, it is time to take action.
